Egg donation and surrogacy are options for people and couples having difficulties conceiving. When a woman agrees to carry and deliver a child for a couple or single individual who cannot have children naturally, they engage in surrogacy.  In contrast, egg donation involves either the recipient’s sperm or the donor’s sperm fertilizing the donor’s eggs. Surrogacy and egg donation procedures have become more common in recent years for couples unable to conceive traditionally.

What is egg donation?

Egg donation is a form of assisted reproduction in which a woman donates her eggs to a couple or individual. The donor’s eggs are fertilized with the recipient or donor’s sperm in order to create embryos. Those who cannot have their children due to infertility, advanced maternal age, genetic illnesses, or other medical concerns can benefit from egg donors.

What Are the Requirements To Be an Egg Donor?

Basic criteria must be completed to be considered a possible egg donor at Gifted Journeys.

  • Healthy with a good family health history (including mental health)
  • Healthy BMI (the doctor’s office will not accept overweight or underweight applicants)
  • Between the ages of 21 – 28
  • Not currently breastfeeding, on the Depo-Provera shot, IUD, or any implant-based birth control method
  • You may be qualified to donate after discontinuing these methods for approximately three months.
  • No smoking, drugs, or excessive alcohol use (all donors are tested)

You can read our previous blog posts to understand the egg donation process. You can learn more from this blog post about the minimum age criteria for egg donors and other important details for those who want to donate their eggs.

Does donating my eggs affect my fertility?

Recent studies have shown that donating eggs poses no risk to the health of the donor or her future fertility, whether through natural or assisted conception. However, prospective donors should learn much about egg donation and its accompanying hazards before deciding. We recommend that all donors read the resources on becoming egg donors provided by the New York Department of Health. (http://www.health.ny.gov/publications/1127/)
