Are you one of our intended moms above the age of 35? Or have you had repeated miscarriages? Have you gone through several unsuccessful cycles of in vitro fertilization treatment? Or are you worried about multiple pregnancy?
We here at Gifted Journeys want to ensure that you know about an exciting technology to consider among your options.
My aim is to make the option of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) and Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) very simple for you to understand.
THE FOUR STEPS OF PGD/PGS
* Generate a number of embryos through in vitro fertilization
* Remove a single or small number of cells from embryos at a very early stage
* Examine of the genes of these embryos
* Insert embryos that are found free of abnormalities into the uterus
Fertility pioneers say that this appears to be, statistically, a game-changer! Research shows that 42 year-old women can often achieve comparable fertility results to 35 year-old women. This is a great development!
INFERTILITY AND GENETIC DISORDERS
Unfortunately, genetically abnormal embryos contribute greatly to the natural decline of fertility in women. These embryos are often nonviable, most will not implant, some will cause a miscarriage or some survive with syndromes like Down’s, Turner’s, Klinefelter’s, Edward’s or cri-du-chat, cystic fibrosis, sickle-cell disease or muscular dystrophy.
The PGD/PGS process excludes the embryos that would likely have an adverse effect on the pregnancy and/or quality of life of the baby.
THE GOAL OF PGD/PGS
The goal is to select a healthy embryo that may lead to a healthy pregnancy. Selecting to utilize PGD/PGS means that intended parent(s) may elect to transfer a single embryo over taking the risk of a multiple pregnancy. And, overall, PGD/PGS brings to bear a higher probability of pregnancy and a higher likelihood of a happy, healthy outcome.
